This website is designed to provide an overview of Airds Estate and some of the activities the estate has to offer.

Airds is a medium sized sporting estate situated in the South West of Scotland. The estate covers some 2,700 acres and comprises three hill farms, forestry, deciduous woodland, moorland and hill lochs as well as significant frontage on the Blackwater of Dee. The principal activities of the estate are forestry, field sports, farming and holiday accommodation.

The estate is located on the Western shore of Loch Ken between Laurieston and New Galloway and stretches Westwards into the Galloway hills for some five miles. The two principal farms are Airds of Kells and Ringour, which lie adjacent to each other beside the village of Mossdale. West of the village is the Airie hill and Airie farm, beside the route of the old railway line that ran from Castle Douglas to Stranraer. This part of the estate marches with the Galloway Forest Park, which is owned by the Forestry Commission and covers some 500,000 acres of the Galloway hills. In addition to the farms and moorland, there is approximately 250 acres of mature forestry, comprising mainly Sitka Spruce but also Scots Pine and Douglas Fir. As well as the principal houses of the three farms, there are five other cottages on the estate, some of which are available as holiday lets. Further information on the holiday accommodation can be found on the Accommodation page.

Conservation of wildlife species is a priority, and the estate provides a habitat for numerous conservation species of bird, including the Red Kite (the estate is on the Galloway Red Kite Trail), Golden Eagle, Black Grouse and Hen Harrier. In addition, the mature oak woodlands bordering Loch Ken have been designated a SSSI.

Currently the three farms are rented out for grazing on an annual basis. More information on the farms can be found on the Farming page.
